of all the components of a good night's sleep, dreams seem to be least within our control. in dreams, a window opens into a world where logic is suspended and dead people speak a century ago, freud formulated his revolutionary theory that dreams were the disguised shadows of our unconscious desires and fears, by the late 1970s, neurologists had switched to thinking of them as just "mental noise" — the random byproducts of the neural-repair work that goes on during sleep. now researchers suspect that dreams are part of the mind's emotional thermostat, regulating moods while the brain is "off-line". and one leading authority says that these intensely powerful mental events can be not only harnessed but actually brought under conscious control, to help us sleep and feel better. "it's your dream," says rosalind cartwright, chair of psychology at chicago's medical center. "if you don't like it, change it.”

the link between dreams and emotions shows up among the patients in cartwright's clinic most people seem to have more bad dreams early in the night, progressing toward happier ones before awakening, suggesting that they are working through negative feelings generated during the day. because our conscious mind is occupied with daily life we don't always think about the emotional significance of the day's events — until, it appears, we begin to dream.

and this process need not be left to the unconscious. cartwright believes one can exercise conscious control over recurring bad dreams. as soon as you awaken, identify what is upsetting about the dream. visualize how you would like it to end instead; the next time it occurs, try to wake up just enough to control its course. with much practice people can learn to, literally, do it in their sleep.

① of all the components of a good night's sleep, dreams seem to be least within our control. ② in dreams, a window opens into a world where logic is suspended and dead people speak.

exercise is one of the key components of a healthy lifestyle.

water is composed of hydrogen and oxygen.

suspend/s??spend/

:to officially stop something from continuing, especially for a short time 暂停,中止
sales of the drug will be suspended until more tests are completed.

③ a century ago, freud formulated his revolutionary theory that dreams were the disguised shadows of our unconscious desires and fears; by the late 1970s, neurologists had switched to thinking of them as just "mental noise" — the random byproducts of the neural-repair work that goes on during sleep.

分号前的部分,that dreams were… 分号后的句子主干则是 neurologists had switched to thinking of them as just "mental noise” ,分别介绍了弗洛伊德和二十世纪七十年代的neurologist 神经病学家们关于「梦」的主张。

formulate这个词可以很大,比如我们可以说 formulate a theory创立一套理论,formulate a policy制定一套政策,也可以很小,制定一个计划 也可以用上 formulate,formulate a plan。

unconscious/?n?k?n??s/

英文释义:unable to see, move, feel etc in the normal way because you are not conscious不省人事的,失去知觉的
she was knocked unconscious.
英文释义:a feeling or thought that is unconscious is one that you have without realizing it(感觉或想法)无意识的,未意识到的
an unconscious need to be loved

she made the switch from full-time to part-time work when her first child was born.

④ now researchers suspect that dreams are part of the mind's emotional thermostat, regulating moods while the brain is "off-line”.

⑤ and one leading authority says that these intensely powerful mental events can be not only harnessed but actually brought under conscious control, to help us sleep and feel better. ⑥ "it's your dream," says rosalind cartwright, chair of psychology at chicago's medical center. "if you don't like it, change it.”

harness作名词表示「马具」,用作动词时,表示 to control and use the force or strength of sth to produce power or to achieve sth 控制,利用(以产生能量等)

we must harness the skill and creativity of our workforce.

he holds the chair of philosophy at oxford.
a new chair of medicine

① the link between dreams and emotions shows up among the patients in cartwright's clinic.

show up在文中的意思是 to be easy to see or notice 「显露,显现出来」

use a light colour which will show up on a dark background.

除此之外,这个词组还可以表示 to arrive where you have arranged to meet sb or do sth 「如约赶到;出现」 。

it was getting late when she finally showed up.

② most people seem to have more bad dreams early in the night, progressing toward happier ones before awakening, suggesting that they are working through negative feelings generated during the day.

这一段的第二句比较长,主干其实很短,most people seem to have more bad dreams,后面的两个分词结构都是状语,可以先略去不看。

③ because our conscious mind is occupied with daily life we don't always think about the emotional significance of the day's events — until, it appears, we begin to dream.

如果我们表示「忙于做某事」,就可以用 be occupied with sth,可以替换 be busy with sth.

she's fully occupied with work.

① and this process need not be left to the unconscious. ② cartwright believes one can exercise conscious control over recurring bad dreams.

within one’s control 表示「在……控制之中」;
be brought under control 表示「被控制」;

recur

英文释义:if some-thing, especially something bad or unpleasant, recurs, it happens again(尤指坏事或令人不快的事)再次发生;重演
recurring dream / nightmare

③ as soon as you awaken, identify what is upsetting about the dream. ④ visualize how you would like it to end instead; the next time it occurs, try to wake up just enough to control its course. ⑤ with much practice people can learn to, literally, do it in their sleep.

visualize /?v??u?la?z/

英文释义:to form a picture of someone or something in your mind设想,想象
i tried to visualize the house while he was describing it.
